Subgroup Summary - CAD
At the beginning of the year I was uncertain of whether I would join the new CMH robotics team or not. I was looking for something new to get involved in but was uncertain what. Some of my friends joined the team so I gave it a shot. After being involved I am definitely happy that I decided to join.
In the beginning of the design phase I was not burdened with that many responsibilities in terms of CAD. We were just discussing plans and did not have a substantial design in the works; therefore, I instead helped every way I would without having a tangible design in mind.
Once we finalized the plans for our robot I began working on the CAD drawings using Autodesk Inventor. Fortunately FIRST posts the drawings for the kit of parts. This saved a ton of time when trying to compile a summative file that includes all of the individual pieces.
Unfortunately I am the only active member of the team that has substantial experience using CAD software. Because of this, I was the only person who worked on the drawings. This brought its own difficulties. When trying to create the individual parts I ran into abstract extrusions and such that would have been easier to deal with given the opportunity to collaborate with another experienced CAD user.
Overall I helped with the rest of the robot more than the CAD drawings in particular. I learned that determination and hard work are key in order to get things done. In the future I hope that the team will acquire a larger scope of people familiar with CAD so that the workload can be distributed more evenly.
